The primary role of the exhibition “Volcanoes and Mankind” is to inform and introduce people to the fascinating world of volcanoes, while at the same time highlighting the multi-facetted relationship Man has woven with these magic mountains since the beginning of time. Philippe Bourseiller’s photographic testimony opens up this extraordinary world, a world which is usually inaccessible to most of us. His works are a tribute to the majesty of our planet. Even more than the beauty in the images presented, the exhibition makes us think about our relationship to Nature.

It reminds us that below the asphalt of our huge cities, lurks a living planet. When confronted with a volcanic eruption, Man becomes fully aware of his true dimension, in comparison with the enormous force of Nature. “Volcanoes and Mankind” is an exhibition of 100 very large format photographs, to be shown for a minimum of 2 months is city centers, if possible outdoors, in places open to the public (avenues, boardwalks, parks, or public gardens, etc.), but can be shown indoors also. The exhibition’s layout can, of course, be modified to suit the site where it is to be presented.

Lit up at night, and open to visitors free-of-charge in most cases, “Volcanoes and Mankind” is intended for the general public. Each photograph is accompanied by clear and informative captions in several languages. A geologist serves as a guide for school groups, hoping to increase their knowledge of the universe of volcanoes and the Earth Sciences in general, which are a part of several years’ curriculum in secondary schools. A 70-point questionnaire is given to the teachers and students in addition to the guided tour.
